Dressing up for Halloween isn’t just for kids — it’s fun for grownups to celebrate, too. This year, make your costume the best one yet by designing it yourself with some pieces that are already a part of your wardrobe. Here are our favorite costume ideas so you can dress to impress.
White Walker Zombie
Winter is coming... and if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, dressing up as a bone-chilling White Walker makes an awesome costume. You’ll need to start with an edgy outfit made up of lots of leather, like a black leather jacket with a pair of leather pants or leggings tucked into knee-high boots. You’ll also need some leather gloves, a chunky leather belt (or any other leather accessories that you have in your closet), and a few faux fur pieces, such as a faux fur vest or even a small fur blanket that you can drape over your shoulders. If you want to look even more authentic, you can craft some armor out of cardboard and add a wig of wild white hair. Finish off your frozen White Walker-inspired look with a prop sword, lots of zombie face makeup, and ice blue contact lenses.
Unleash your wild side with the Suicide Squad version of Harley Quinn. Get a hold of red or blue shorts, white knee-high boots, and a red bomber jacket. Add some gold jewelry, some playful pigtails, and a baseball bat, prop axe, or a lollipop as your prop. Finish your fierce Harley Quinn costume with red and blue face paint or makeup and a bright and sassy red lip.
Sweet Sugar Skulls
Here's a couple’s costume that’s easier than (pumpkin) pie. To start, dress in all black or all white (lots of style options here: an adorable little black dress with fishnets; white denim with a white bell-sleeved top; etc...). Next, paint your faces with white and black face paint, or attempt a makeup transformation into a sugar skull (there are tons of video tutorials out there for how to achieve a fabulous floral Dia de Los Muertos look). You two will be the sweetest skulls there ever were!
For a simple and handsome costume, a rugged lumberjack is extremely easy to put together. All you need is a flannel, a pair of jeans, boots, a toque hat, and a prop axe. If you want to add a scary element to your lumberjack costume (or any Halloween costume you wear), just add some zombie makeup to instantly take your look from silly to spooky.
Mother of Dragons (Daenerys Targaryen)
Or, is Khaleesi your favorite Game of Thrones character? Then why not dominate the seven kingdoms (and the costume party) as Daenerys Targaryen? You can simulate her gown with a maxi dress in blue, grey, or any earth tone. Add a cape, a long blonde wig (decorated with lots of intricate hair braids), slouchy boots or leather sandals, and oodles of chunky costume jewelry. And if you want to emulate her tough warrior vibe, you should add some half-hand gloves, too. As your prop, you can walk around with a dragon figurine on your shoulder.
Unleash your inner child this Halloween and try any of these costume ideas to make your fantasy a reality. Or, get creative and think of your own — just take a quick peek inside your closet and see what you can come up with. There’s always makeup, too, which is a simple way to transform any outfit into a Halloween costume.
